Competitions

Each season, the Kennett Symphony of Chester County holds competitions for young artists.

Each competition is limited to 16 entrants. A panel of three judges determines the prize winners, who receive a cash award.

Instrumental Competition

The competition, chaired by Mr. and Mrs. David F. Gilbert, is for gifted musicians in grades 9-12 (during the current school year) who play string, woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. The public is invited free of charge to hear these young emerging artists.

The 2010 Instrumental Competition was held on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Thank you to all the competitors and the volunteers at Kendal.

The date of the 2011 competition is: November 19, 2011 • 1 pm
Free and open to the public.

Applications will be accepted starting September 20, 2011

Voice Competition

The competition, chaired by Mr. and Mrs. David F. Gilbert, is for gifted singers age 18-26 as of January 1, 2011. The public is invited free of charge to hear these young emerging artists.

The 2011 Voice Competition was held on Saturday, June 4, 2011. Thank you to all the competitors and the volunteers at Kendal.

The date of the 2012 competition is: March 17, 2012 • 1:00 PM.
We will start accepting applications after January 17, 2012.

Competitors must perform three operatic, oratorio or concert arias from the 18th to the 20th centuries, with at least one in English.

Three prizes will be awarded:

  • First Prize: $500 and a solo performance with the Kennett Symphony.
  • Second Prize: $300
  • Third Prize: $100

Junior Instrumental Competition
for Young Artists

The annual Junior Instrumental Competition, chaired by Deborah Rodgers, is for gifted musicians in grades 4-8 who play piano or a band or orchestral instrument.

This years competition will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium of Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, PA.

Application deadline is January 29, 2012.

Competitors will perform one intermediate (or higher) composition lasting no longer than five minutes. Cuts are allowed and memorization is required. Repertoire must be chosen from the standard classical literature.

Prizes will be awarded in two divisions;
4th-6th grades and 7th-8th grades,
with prizes in each category of
$100, $50, and $25.

Presentation of the prizes will be made at the Kennett Symphony’s Family Concert on March 11, 2012 at West Chester University, West Chester, PA.
